After spending 8 years playing the teenager Elena Gilbert – the never-ending love of Salvatore’s brothers Stefan and Damon in The Vampire Diaries – the lively Nina Dobrev accepted to come back on the small screen playing a completely different role. Indeed, she started to act in the new multi-cam comedy FAM, which started on CBS last Jan. 10, 2019.
Nina plays Clem, a woman trying to get in good with her fiancé’s upstanding family; but…the plan is ruined from the moment her hot mess of a half-sister comes to live with her to escape their disaster of a father.
In the cast, we also find Tone Bell (from Truth Be Told) who co-star with Dobrev, playing Nick, her character’s fiancè; Odessa Adlon (from Nashville), Clem’s rebellious 16-year-old half-sister; Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sheryl Lee Ralph who are Nick’s parents.
Vampire girl or Lively girl?
In a recently interview to TV Guide Nina opens up about her new character and how she decided to accept this new work. She reveals what scared her about returning to TV after a while, but she also admits that she loves doing things that make her uncomfortable from one side, but challenge her on the other.
“It felt like it was a perfect storm” she said.
I like doing both. I like a balance of anything. I mean, succeeding in life is finding that balance, in any area of life. But in this one in particular, whenever I do a comedy, I want to do a drama to counteract it, and vice versa. But if I had to choose, I feel like I would gravitate towards comedies, because who doesn’t like to laugh, you know?
I did six years on a show that was very serious, for the most part. Not all the time, but was more serious than not, and it’s been a nice change to laugh all day, every day, and keep working on deepening these laugh lines.
